i think i just wasted about half an hour of my life staring at this.
It switches sides when you look at it using the left and right sides of your brain.
Wut.

these things freak me out, and I am personally convinced that they are made to randomly switch directions…like, no matter what you do, eventually they will just go the other way and then back again and so on
Even when they’re facing different directions, the black part of each of the three bodies is in the same position at the same time. The only differences are the red, blue, and white lines that make the body appear to be facing a certain direction. (If you don’t believe me, click and drag it to try to find a frame where the black parts don’t match - I had to take it into Photoshop and look at it frame by frame to be sure.)
If you cover up the center body in the original gif, the girl on the left appears to be turning clockwise, and the girl on the right counterclockwise. When you uncover it, I’m assuming the center body just seems to be turning the same direction as whichever of the outer bodies you’re focusing slightly more on. When I unfocus my eyes a bit (or just take off my glasses), they all appear to be turning in the same direction because, in fact, the black part of each body is the same within each frame.
